The R-410A Phaseout: Key Dates & Transition Timeline

January 1, 2025

R-410A Ban for New AC Systems

New Residential & Light Commercial. AC & Heat Pump systems can no longer use R-410A.

Manufacturers must switch to low-GWP refrigerants. (e.g., R-32, R-454B)

2028

Major HFC Supply Cut

HFC Production/import reduced to 40% of baseline.

Possible price increase on R-410A.

2029

R-410A Supply Tightens – Higher Costs Expected

Potential supply restrictions for R-410A servicing.

2036

Final HFC Phaseout – 85% Reduction

Final Phaseout: HFC supply reduced by 85%. R-410A will be scarce and expensive, similiar to R-22 today.

Most systems will use A2L refrigerants (R-32, R-454B)

What is Subcooling & Superheat?

Subcooling is how many degrees the liquid refrigerant is cooled below its saturation temperature before entering the metering device. Superheat is how many degrees the refrigerant vapor is heated above its saturation temperature after leaving the evaporator. Together, they show if the system has the right refrigerant charge and if heat transfer is happening correctly.

This picture shows where subcooling and superheat happen in the refrigeration cycle

Capacitors Explained

Capacitors store and release energy to help motors start and run. In air conditioners, they’re one of the most common parts to fail, often causing a “no cool” call. Knowing how to test and replace them is a must for any technician.

How to Spot a Refrigerant Leak

Low refrigerant can cause weak cooling, frozen coils, or even compressor failure. But refrigerant doesn’t “get used up” — it leaks. This guide explains the signs of a leak, common places to check, and why fixing the leak is more important than just adding more refrigerant.
